In Girdwood it is easy to get in touch with nature. Take a bike ride on the scenic paved Bird to Gird Trail, or choose from one of many spectacular hiking trails. Try your hand at gold panning or ride the tram up Mt. Alyeska for a panoramic view of the mountains and glaciers.
From Whittier, you can sample the beauty of Alaska on a 26 Glacier Cruise or plan your own custom cruise on Prince William Sound. Or try sea kayaking for a close-up look at the Sound. On the way to Whittier, stop off at the Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center; you are sure to get a good picture of a bear and moose there.
For those seeking high adventure, try white water rafting, or paragliding. Or perhaps you want to take a helicopter up to a glacier and try summer snowmobiling or dog mushing. The Ascending Path offers guided eco-adventures from glacier hiking to rock and ice climbing.
For the fisherman there are many options. Choose from a day of guided salmon or trout fishing on the Kenai River. Fishing on the ocean can be quite an adventure, where success is measured in terms of hundreds of pounds of fish. Or just head out with a pole and try your luck “combat fishing” for salmon on the Russian River.
Seward, located 90 miles south of Girdwood, offers spectacular wildlife & glacier cruises from Resurrection Bay. The saltwater fishing is pure excitement. Stop at Exit Glacier or take a summer sled dog ride and tour an Iditarod racing kennel.
